Duties include, but are not limited to: contacting fishermen and working onboard commercial vessels to assess populations of fished species, utilizing software programs for data entry and analysis, and participating in other DMR programs as necessary.

Conduct all aspects of the Fisheries-Independent Monitoring (FIM) program including but not limited to:-Act as supervisor and crew to inshore fisheries monitoring (120+ trips) and offshore fisheries monitoring using stratified-random sampling design. Duties include boat navigation, nekton identification, biological dissections, crew coordination, and data entry.-Collect and identify juvenile and adult nekton for long-term population assessments (includes both inshore and offshore fishes, i.e. SEAMAP samples).-Perform research utilizing FIM database and statistical software (e.g., SAS Enterprise Guide, Primer-E, etc.).-Maintain sampling gear and vehicles monthly, or as needed (tire rotations, oil changes, fiberglass repairs, etc.).Offshore component: -Side-scan sonar: maintain and oversee equipment during bottom-type surveys of the Gulf of Mexico and use ArcGIS applications to identify seafloor habitat.-Camera pods: maintain cameras and computer equipment to assess fish abundance at select offshore sites chosen from side-scan surveys, as well as complete fish identification and count surveys using video-reading software.-Hooked-gear: monitoring of nearshore and offshore reef fisheries via hook-and-line and vertical longline surveys.
