For the first two years at Boreal my main role at the company was research. I investigated the feasibility of detection systems based on mid-IR lasers. I was often tasked with evaluating the suitability of detecting gases at different wavelengths based on laser availability and interference from other gases. I assisted with the development several different noise reduction algorithms and performed many different tests to evaluate their effectiveness.I also performed tests using Boreal's existing products in order find ways to improve system performance. Eventually I moved into a role focused more on engineering and product development. I finished development on a partially designed point sensing tunable diode laser (TDL) system and was able to bring it successfully to market. I managed procurement of all electrical and mechanical components of the first production run, and ensured the product met CSA hazardous location standards.I was the lead developer on a new open path TDL analyzer platform. I was involved in all phases of the design, including system specification and performance requirements, electrical and mechanical design, performance testing and debugging, as well as logistics and production. This product was successfully brought into production.During this time I also did many small projects involving mechanical and PCB design to replace obsolete components, improve existing products and facilitate testing.
