My career started in May of 93 when I was hired as service technician. I worked my way up to an A rate tech in 18 months focusing mostly on drive train troubleshooting and repair. Back then everyone was an engine tech but no one wanted to be a gear man. So I took it upon myself to learn as much as I could. Fortunately for me the 2 guys that were already at the top of their game were willing to show me a thing or two, and that I have not forgotten. In 1999 I was asked to fill in as the 2nd shift foreman, so I did. And after 3 months, the power that be were dazzled or baffled enough to offer me the position full time! And I haven't looked back since. If you were to tell me in 1999 that trucks would be as technologically advanced as they are now I would have called you crazy! I take great pride in our Service Department and take whatever means necessary to ensure the truck is diagnosed correctly the first time, repaired efficiently in both time and dollars, and we get that small business owners back on the road again. A philosophy of mine that I remind my team of from time to time is this. The truck is someone's livelihood that we have in the shop, this is how they make a living. If the truck isn't moving freight, then that small business owner is not making any money. Simple as that. Am I looking forward to more automation in our industry, truthfully no. But when in comes, as it already has, I will do whatever it takes to get grip on it. I just repeat my own philosophy to myself and that's motivation enough!
