Created and directs the Visual World Investigate Lab, a free public laboratory open every day that serves as a bridge between the public and the formal researchers in the Nature Research Center. The lab features robots, electronics, and over a dozen custom designed computer stations with touchscreens and augmented reality that teach about science and how science is conducted using maps, models, animations and simulations. Teaches classes ranging from GIS to robotics for individuals and school groups. Since its opening in 2012, the lab has grown and evolved in unexpected directions in order to best serve the needs of its visitors, and as a result of the lab’s popularity I have been interviewed in print, online and on local TV. In 2013 I was invited to Beijing to take part in an annual science festival where I erected a miniature version of the lab to teach thousands of school children over the course of a week. Managed a Stable Isotope Laboratory. Operated and maintained equipment used for mass spectrometry, flow injection analysis and various sample preparation devices. Key responsibilities included supporting Rivernet, a program providing water quality data to DENR and the public, and supervising graduate student lab work. Other duties included lab maintenance, ordering supplies, data archiving, SOP development, website construction, maintaining eighteen lab computers (including a Windows and Sun server) and assistance in the field maintaining water quality monitoring instruments. Accomplishments included a complete overhaul of the website, which now includes interactive data visualizations and greatly streamlining the post-processing procedures involved in publishing data acquired from the many real-time water quality instruments via advanced VBA scripting techniques.

Performed technical duties that helped the public, and all levels of government protect and restore North Carolina's water quality. Primary duties included maintenance of the surface water body classification database (BIMS), ArcGIS map creation and website creation/maintenance. Designed educational brochures and assisted with presentations to the general public.

Worked with state and federal governmental agencies, land developers, and environmental scientists to complete environmental permit applications. Performed both small and large-scale wetland delineations,natural community assessments, impact assessments, mitigation design and monitoring plans, and conducted protected species studies.
