    Research Fellow - Cobbauge
University Of Plymouth Jan 2015 - Present
    Plymouth
As a research fellow at Plymouth University, I have been involved with several research projects. These have included:- Providing consultation on thermal imaging methodologies to the University of British Columbia.- Environmental monitoring of a ward at Derriford hospital using air and patient temperature data.- Thermal imaging and report writing for a large scale thermal imaging project where I worked as part of a team to inspect over 200 dwellings in Cornwall (Part of a DECC/Eden project).- Research as part of an EPSRC TEDDI funded ‘eViz’ project. Part of this research focused on the public perception of thermal images and how these could be used to motivate building improvements.- Undertaking in-situ U-value analysis of new and historic buildings using heat flux sensor equipment.- Time-lapse thermal imaging of house facades over 24 hour periods to visualise the transient nature of solar gain, stored in building components. This was used in short videos to raise awareness of the values from solar gain. I have also published several journal papers and presented at research findings at conferences around the country. I am currently involved with the Interreg funded CobBauge project, which seeks to deliver a new cob wall construction that meets the building regulations for thermal performance whilst remaining structurally stable as a monolithic construction. This project is now into phase 2, where we will be building two full scale buildings out of this construction.

Researcher - Creds Deviz (Defect Visualisation Via Thermography)
University Of Plymouth Jun 2020 - Dec 2023
    Plymouth, England, United Kingdom
DeViz (Defect visualisation via thermography)This project uses thermal imaging as a behaviour change tool for informing, empowering, and engaging site supervisors to help them achieve zero defects in their buildings and so encourage a learning loop and zero defect culture. In parallel, it is developing a methodology to enable autonomous checking by construction supervisors using thermal imaging cameras, monitoring their own work, identifying build defects as the build / retrofit happens, rectifying them much earlier in the construction process.

  • Gaia Architects
    Architect
    Gaia Architects 2006 - 2012
    Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Worked in the Edinburgh office of Gaia Architects, where I undertook a range of energy efficient and ecological projects. Including:Plummer’s Wood - A private house, Scottish Borders. The German PassivHaus standards of construction were followed for this project and included passive strategies such as orientation for daylight and solar gain, solar shading, super insulation and air-tightness.A Brettstapel massive timber superstructure was prefabricated in Austria and shipped to site for erection. Following this, an internal fit-out was undertaken to complete the house.Other key features include slate flooring for thermal mass, clay plaster for moisture transfusivity and careful material selection to avoid where possible toxic materials, which could affect the internal environment.Glentress Visitor Centre – Visitor and mountain biking centre, Scottish Borders. During this project I worked on the first of two contracts for this project, the enabling works contract. This contract comprised of all the external landscaping, service infrastructure and other features necessary to enable the building contract (second contract) to complete the construction of the visitor centre buildings.
