Working under the guidance of a senior surveyor from the Brentwood office the role entails the management and monitoring of the associated costs of works packages and undertaking work in relation to the appointment of sub contractors for construction works.

Providing assistance to a group of senior and project surveyors in a range of activities including; the measurement of required or completed works from scaled drawings, tender analysis of sub contractor quotations for works packages, communicating with sub contractors over the telephone or via email to discuss aspects of ongoing and upcoming construction works, producing works packages to send out to subcontractors for upcoming work along with other cost management and monitoring tasks and general administration duties.

Over the summer I obtained another position as a trainee quantity surveyor, as following previous experience, I wanted to further develop my practical skills. A W Hardy kindly offered me such an opportunity to progress working alongside their two surveyors, gaining an insight of on site practice and estimating procedures. A W Hardy are a main Contractor and currently have several primary school developments which include the construction of a new assembly hall, an extension of existing buildings and refurbishment of internal spaces. Since starting in September I've been able to attend on site progress meetings, alongside the Clients and Architects, measuring completed work on site to assess accuracy of Sub-Contractor valuations, visited site to check work done against the agreed programme, measured drawings to quantify required works to assist in the production of tender estimates and assessed sub-contractor quotations for work packages, to consider appropriateness.

Gained voluntary work experience, with W&H Roads, a Southend based Civil Engineering firm. Between July and December 2013 I went in one day a week, to gain some much needed practical experience of construction to support the theory learnt at university. Began with a Contracts Manager/Engineer who oversaw several projects around Southend, most of which were Council Contracts, but did include a large residential development at the Garrison. During my time I assisted him in measuring completed work on site, as part of interim payment applications, meet with Client representatives at site and assisted him with setting out in preparation for excavation. I also spent time with the Site Manager and freelance Quantity Surveyor, at Woodlands School, a Skanska run project. Here I gained further experience in measuring completed works, filled in day works sheets for additional work and variations, completed pre-task briefing cards prior to works being conducted and assisted in the completion of monthly labour and plant returns.
