Apr 2018 - Jun 2020

Project Supervisor (Graduate)

National Grid Gas Distribution (Inactive Page)

Manchester, United Kingdom

My final placement within the graduate programme here at National Grid, which I requested to be within the operational directorate of the business. My role sat under the operate and maintain umbrella, within the projects team who undertake many of the annual programmes of work for network strategy and also reactive adhoc projects that come in. During this time I was keen to get a hands on experience of what our engineers do day in day out. For this I spent 4 weeks working with a team who were carrying out replacement of assets on our AGIs and inspections on kit across the north west. Being on an operational gas site was great for my understanding and allowed me to fully take in how our business works. The Asset Health Trial that was being undertaken by a colleague was a great opportunity to be involved in a new and exciting method of working and allowed me to see the contract management side of project management which I had not experienced yet. After this on the job experience I settled down into my role of coordinating projects such as the painting programme and further asset replacement on sites across the north west. As an extra to my day job I was lucky enough to be involved in organising Work Inspiration Week as part of the Employability Program which is run in the head offices of National Grid. Inviting around 20 students from local schools to come for a whole week and experience life in a company like our own. Alongside my graduate colleagues we organised and coordinated visits to some of our operational sites, a sustainability centre and also our offices. Here we taught the students about our business and about working life in general, all to concluding in some presentations about their time in the business.

Sep 2016 - Mar 2017

Project Delivery Officer (Graduate)

Hinckley

Within our CMAC (contract management and control) department I was responsible for a portfolio of projects focused on improving our customer satisfaction through minimising the number of excavations we have to dig in the customers property and garden. This portfolio of projects allowed me to get real experience of programme management and reporting on multiple projects. Although I was only in this role for 6 months I was able to carry out workshops with senior leadership and key stakeholders to get a great understanding of how these projects will work in the business. I organised and lead multiple workshops with these stakeholders and delivered a portfolio of projects that would have real business value and prevented 1000's of excavations from being carried out on customers driveways and gardens. This placement highlighted my enthusiasm for projects and influenced my choice for final placement and my career aspirations.

Apr 2016 - Sep 2016

Design Analyst

Hinckley

My first placement on the National Grid graduate scheme. Working alongside a team of network analysts to get to the root cause of our pressure problems within our network (and our connections to independent gas transporters), come up with a solution and coordinate the implementation of this solution. During my 6 month placement I learnt to use our modelling software at an advanced level to analyse the effects of our operational equipment on our network and to use this and other systems of data to recreate the faults. This could be used to diagnose the issue and get the solution to operations to fix. Alongside these jobs I worked on multiple reinforcement and conditioning replacement program solutions.

Sep 2015 - Mar 2016

Policy Administrator

Leicester, United Kingdom

During my summer at university I secured a temp role at National Grid, in the Gas Distribution Business Unit. I worked with a great team on the High Rise Building surveys project, where my initial role included entering the data into a database but evolved and developed as I helped out with extra tasks for the team to reach targets. Over the weeks I improved my knowledge of how the business works and really enjoyed communicating with fellow employees to get the tasks finished on time. After the summer of working in the Hinckley Office, I continued to work remotely in this role part time whilst at university at weekends.

Jul 2014 - Aug 2015

Waiter/Bartender

Earlswood, West Midlands

At the Limes Country Lodge I worked as a waiter and bartender. The venue has its own restaurant, hotel rooms and wedding lodge. I worked part time while I studied for my A levels and then worked during the holidays while back from university. My responcibilities included managing room bookings, taking and serving food and drink orders and taking part in the smooth running of wedding services and events. In my time at the Limes I was awarded the first 'employee of the month' award and became a valued member of the team.
