Editor
As a news editor at the Suburban Life, I oversaw the production of six weekly print newspapers and contributed to the paper's daily news website. In addition to editing and reporting I managed staff reporters and freelancers, contributed photography, assisted in managing social media accounts, planned long-term projects and oversaw layout. While working at the Suburban Life, the company produced 22 weekly print newspapers and a daily news website serving readers in the suburban Chicago counties of Cook, DuPage, Will and Kane with a combined circulation of 140,000. www.mysuburbanlife.com
Founder And Editor
Jettison Quarterly was a Chicago-based magazine covering art and culture in the Midwest. It was one of the first magazines to be produced for the web in an interactive format that preserved the experience of reading a glossy. Over the publication's life, Jettison became a respected source of news and arts coverage for the region. Jettison was highly praised for it content and design. The magazine was later expanded to include a limited-edition print version of 10,000 copies for each issue. I founded Jettison Quarterly as a journalism student at Columbia College to provide longform reporting on Midwestern arts and and culture with a focus on Chicago. As editor, I planned and edited all content for publication and managed a team of freelance writers, photographers, designers and web developers to produce each issue. I also oversaw the magazine's finances, development and distribution.
Local Editor
Patch.com, owned at the time by AOL/Huffington Post, was a hyper-local, daily news website and community forum. During my time with Patch, I served as a local editor in Illinois covering the suburban Chicago communities of Oak Park, Forest Park, La Grange, Western Springs and Glen Ellyn. At Patch, I planned coverage, reported breaking news, produced photos and video, assigned freelancers, managed social media accounts, tracked site metrics and served as Patch's liaison to the community.
Investigative Intern
I worked as an investigative intern for the Chicago Reporter for two semesters during college. The experience was highly formative for me as a journalist. During my time at the Reporter, I reported and wrote for the print publication and website, assisted in the reporting of full-time staff and fact checked articles before publication.
Editorial Assistant
Stop Smiling — "the magazine for high-minded lowlifes" — was a Chicago-based print magazine featuring long-form journalism, essays and interviews. The company is now a book publisher. As an editorial assistant at Stop Smiling, I helped with the day-to-day tasks of producing and distributing the magazine, as well as providing support through copy editing and factchecking. www.stopsmilingonline.com
