Key contributor to commercial and regulatory matters in several successful tenders, and developing the Quality Management System for EU Medical Device Regulations/ISO 13485.

Growing the platform engineering capability, principally through activities to improve and modernise the company-wide shared cloud hosting stack. I proposed and prototyped the design for overhauling a complex multi-cluster service mesh topology for east-west traffic using Istio, extending the design to support multiple disparate identity domains and granular controls over service discovery within the mesh. Moved on to other opportunities due to changes in remote working practices.

Leading the technology team at Ziglu, a regulated fintech startup operating its own cloud-native coreledger and treasury platform for asset trading on Google Cloud Platform. I was a hands-on CTO (≈ Principal Engineer) with responsibility across the commercial, investment and technical domains, especially leading technical due diligence with Robinhood Markets to secure a $160mm acquisition deal (regrettably aborted due to regulatory hurdles).I implemented major changes to working practices (agile, data-driven, continuous delivery) to improve delivery velocity. I was jointly responsible for enterprise risk, implementation of financial crime controls, and responding to platform fraud events. Prior to taking on the CTO role, I was a hands-on software engineer and team lead, built the company’s cloud native ledger, treasury platform and MasterCard programme, and launched several innovative products.

I was team lead of Ziglu's platform engineering team, focussed on security, developer experience and non-functional reliability of our software stack. My team focussed on all aspects of the software development lifecycle outside product delivery, building software and security solutions to maximise uptime and reliability of our cloud platform. As a startup, we were also the information security team, responsible for maintaining integrity of peoples' money which resided in our databases, for compliance activities and insider/outsider threat modelling.

I joined Ziglu to broaden my technical understanding of the operation of the financial system. As a Lead Engineer, I designed and built major additions to our back-end core ledger (built in Go, on GCP) and the underlying cloud platform to improve delivery velocity and reliability.My most significant project was launching Ziglu's debit card programme, for which we implemented our own custom-built card processor software (in Go) in the cloud, designed to interface with complex Mastercard APIs. This required deep networking experience to reverse engineer Google's Andromeda software-defined network stack, and crypto experience to launch MDES (Apple Pay/Google Pay integration).I designed system architectural changes to improve internal coordination and reliability, including introducing event-driven architecture (Kafka-based) and implementation of custom Kubernetes operators to support developer self-service.

Sparx is an evidence-based, data-led edtech company that strives to improve educational outcomes. I was a major contributor to the build and operation of the core platform, initially on-premise and later in the cloud. During my tenure, I initiated key technology transformation projects that enabled scalability of the company's products to millions of learners and enabling a path to financial sustainability.Key projects included the major transformation from an on-prem Python monolith to a multi-tenant, cloud-based microservice software platform (Go, gRPC, GCP). I also championed the use of modern software development practices, such as continuous delivery, which saw improved delivery cadence and enhanced quality/reliability. I set up the company's Platform/SRE team, led InfoSec efforts, and regularly provided technical consulting to the legal, privacy and compliance.

I ran an ethical software and IT services business for many years, providing sustainable, meaningful and specialist leadership, consulting and hands-on technical implementation to a range of businesses and charities. I provided technology strategy and advice to a range of clients spanning the architecture, education, financial, legal and manufacturing sectors, in the UK and around the world. I built bespoke cloud and on-premise software solutions, ran on-premise networks and data centres for clients, and provided long-term technical strategy advice, typically using open-source solutions to minimise ownership costs. I was often asked to provide specialist support on a retained basis to internal IT teams.Technologies spanned Windows and Linux environments, multiple cloud vendors, and a range of networking and VoIP platforms.
