About Matthew Matia

Mr. Matia is a native of Cleveland, OH and a graduate of Bowling Green State University (OH), who recently (as of January 2022) joined the ranks of full-time retired grandfathers. To fill in time between that duty, he enjoys being a docent at the National Museum of the US Army, Ft. Belvoir, VA, and whatever honey-do's Household6 comes up with. He volunteers with the Fairfax County Department of Emergency Management and Safety, conducting classes to the communities on emergency preparedness and "Until Help Arrives."Mr. Matia has worked in the emergency management community since 1987. In this capacity he provided subject matter expertise in the development of emergency response training and exercise programs for his clients. He was a senior program manager for the Information and Technologies Division of TRW, Inc. prior to joining FEMA in 2002. After retiring from the Federal workforce in 2018, he provided similar services in cybersecurity operations and planning as a contractor to DHS/CISA. Mr. Matia’s initial assignment with FEMA Region II in New York City was as the Operations Branch Chief. He subsequently served as the Deputy Region Administrator until 2008. He was selected to serve a detail assignment at the Department of Homeland Security Headquarters as the Future Operations Branch Chief in the Office of Operations Coordination and Planning (OPS). In this role he supervised a joint-Department and interagency staff working on senior-level issues in analysis and plans, counterterrorism, and the Secretary’s crisis action teams. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, and was awarded a Master’s degree in Management from Troy State University (AL) in 1983., and is also a graduate of the United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA. In 2008 Mr. Matia was designated as a Senior Fellow for Homeland Security. Mr. Matia served in the US Army, both Active and Reserve, from 1974 to 2012. He has commanded operational units at the company, battalion, brigade, and major functional command levels in Army Aviation, retiring as a Brigadier General .
