About Matthew Mitchell
I am an ecologist interested in linking landscape structure, biodiversity, and ecosystem function, with the supply of ecosystem services. Ecosystem services are those benefits that society receives from ecosystems, such as clean water, food, climate regulation, timber, etc. I am currently a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Queensland researching the links between urban landscape structure with biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services using remote sensing data. For my PhD, using farmland near Montreal as a model system, my research improved our knowledge of landscape and ecosystem dynamics and how these can influence the provision of multiple ecosystem services across agricultural landscapes. This knowledge, in turn, can be used to improve land use and management decisions to maximize landscape multi-functionality.
