About Matthew Patrick
Materials Science and Engineering PhD candidate, supervised by Prof. Katy Barmak in Columbia University's Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics (APAM). We use transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and precession enhanced electron diffraction (PED) based orientation mapping to characterize the microstructure of metallic thin films to investigate grain growth and grain boundary network evolution in nanocrystalline materials. My current project is using machine learning to develop high-throughput analysis techniques to analyze dynamic imaging data collected in-situ in the TEM. We will use these data to draw correlations with grain boundary crystallography obtained from PED-based orientation data to better understand the dynamics of nanocrystalline grain growth.Primary responsible for repair, operation, and maintenance for all lab equipment including the UHV sputtering system, two tube furnaces, chemical back-etching station. Responsible for all chemical waste management, lab inventories, and safety-related operations.Superuser for the Columbia Nano Initiative's FEI F200X S/TEM. I help with routing equipment maintenance, training new users, and advising users on theory and practice for their imaging applications.
