About Matthew Rogers
🏆I won the Silver Award for Best Citizen Beer Communicator 2022 and Silver Award for Best Young Beer Writer 2021 from ‘The British Guild of Beer Writers Annual Awards. As a keen writer and creative, the magazine ‘CAMRAngle’ which I produce for the local CAMRA branch is a great showcase of my skills and abilities: https://swm.camra.org.uk/magazine📰 I became the editor for the ‘CAMRAngle’ just before lockdown and realised that the publication would only survive the pandemic if I was to move it online. I love learning new skills, so leapt at the opportunity to teach myself the page design and layout software InDesign. I then used this new knowledge, along with my pre-existing experience of Adobe Creative Suite, to make the digital publication. The magazine has recently returned to print and can be found in pubs all over Berkshire with an estimated readership of 6000 people.I really enjoyed writing the articles for the magazine, making sure they were of a high standard, and crafting engaging and locally relevant commentaries. I used my excellent communication skills to contact and build a positive rapport with local pubs and breweries so that their news and stories were featured in the magazine. My flair for creativity helped to completely refresh the look of the publication, by designing illustrations and producing the most eye-catching page layout possible. 📝 The aspect of writing I most enjoy is proofreading and editing. I’ve always viewed a well written sentence as a puzzle, rearranging and altering it until the words flow correctly, whilst getting rid of all unnecessary “fluff.” When proofreading for a PhD student and the websites ‘Erolski’ and ‘High Octane Sports’, I methodically restructured and compressed copy, improving the readability of the text.✏I possess strong design skills, having done a degree in illustration and animation. Since then I’ve completed various freelance projects, including animating an educational short for ‘Optimum Physiotherapy’, educating DHL staff about muscle recovery. This could have been a dull and dry presentation, but I enjoyed researching the topic and adapting it into a fun and creative piece. I’ve also animated logos for designers, illustrators and personal development coaches. I used my graphic design skills to present complex concepts in simple ways for The Gap Partnership and Adsensa Ltd. I created mock User Interface (UI) images, aiding both companies to improve their software by using a mixture of images, PowerPoint presentations and graphic schematics.
Listed skills include Animation, Photoshop, After Effects, Traditional Animation, and 17 others.

Communications Assistant
As part of the very busy Communications Team for the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), I help run the Press Office as well as assist both CAMRA’s Campaign and Events teams. My role includes:• Proofreading CAMRA's online news platform What's Brewing (https://wb.camra.org.uk/), BEER magazine (https://wb.camra.org.uk/publications/beer) and Press Releases. • Run CAMRA's social media channels, from creating copy and images for posts, scheduling the content on Hoot Suite software and responding to CAMRA members' questions. • Edit and maintain the CAMRA website (https://camra.org.uk/), uploading new content such as local CAMRA branch diary entries, official statements and press releases, as well as editing webpages and designing images. • Contacting journalists across the UK during the release of the annual Good Beer Guide and Great British Beer Festival.• Writing Press Releases.
Creative Freelancer/Sales Assistant
Whilst working at Paperchase, I have pursued passions and creative projects in my own time. These include:• ‘CAMRAngle’ magazine editor (swm.camra.org.uk) - I write and proofread articles, interview publicans, create illustrations and organize the magazine page design and layout in Adobe InDesign. I have been nominated for the ‘Adnams Awards for Best Beer Writer (Regional Media)’ and the ‘Fuller, Smith & Turner Award for Best Young Beer Writer’ by ‘The British Guild of Beer Writers Annual Awards 2021.• Designing mock User Interface (UI) images for The Gap Partnership, in order to develop future improvements for the company’s software.• Proofreading a PhD thesis, restructuring and compressing copy and thus improving the readability of the text.• Editing and condensing text on a photographer’s website (Erolski.com) by improving and refining the client’s original writing, making the copy as concise as possible for web users to skim read. • Animating for Optimum Physiotherapy in order to educate DHL warehouse staff about muscle recovery. I enjoyed researching the topic and adapting it into something entertaining and creative.• Animating logos for various companies, conveying their businesses in an inventive and striking manner. For examples see jengsdesign.com and thinklesticks.com.
Design Assistant
As the sole in-house designer for the company, I worked closely with the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) to visualise his ideas and proposals for the Adsensa Software. • Created an animation which was shown at a business conference in Monte Carlo, aiding the sales team to grab the attention of potential clients as well as convey the Adsensa software in a simple, yet humorous way. • Designed mock User Interface (UI) images to convey the CTO’s ideas around improvements and updates to the software developers. It also aided communication within the software team as my designs provided a visual aid to prompt discussion.• Produced graphic schematics which were used in conjunction with my mock UI images to create complex PowerPoint presentations. These were then presented as part of pitches to potential clients such as Credit Suisse. • Created icons to be used within Adsensa software which successfully communicated the function of a button through a small, simple illustration.
Website Content Editor
Edited the content of a sportswear website supplying both visual and written copy to webpages.• Wrote relevant text for products, proficiently describing the item and coherently explaining its traits to potential customers.• Used Photoshop to edit images so that the background colours matched the website and made it look more attractive to users. • Designed company advertising, including a banner and fliers, for the first High Octane Sport sale at the Holiday Inn.• Adept at market research; comparing rival sportwear websites to High Octane Sport and making adjustments accordingly.• Online retail experience of posting and packaging items to customers. This included operating the online shop independently, when the owners were on holiday.
