CurrentMedia & Transparency: I lead a team of eight lawyers and paralegals that litigates a docket of nearly 300 Freedom of Information Act cases against federal, state, and local government. Our clients include national and local media, freelance journalists, non-profit organizations, academic researchers, and businesses. Among other successes, we forced the City of Chicago to release video exposing the murder of Laquan McDonald by Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke, and forced the Justice Department to release previously redacted information from the Mueller Report explaining why Donald Trump Jr. was not charged with any crimes. I am a regular speaker at Investigative Reporters & Editors and NICAR conferences. I also litigate First Amendment free speech, petition, and open meetings cases, defend journalists from subpoenas seeking their sources, and provide pre-publication review and counseling. I am the outside general counsel of the Better Government Association, a nearly hundred year old government watchdog in Chicago.Intellectual Property: I represent inventors and entrepreneurs in patent, trademark, false advertising, and trade secret cases.
