Project title: Tools to investigate the capacity of Australian Culicoides as vectors of bluetongue viruses.Bluetongue (BT) is a devastating arthropod borne disease caused by a virus of the same name. Some 26 serotypes of BTV are recognised globally, are transmitted by haematophagous Culicoides midges. In the experiments described in my thesis, tools and techniques were developed to study the host preference of biting midges, the interaction of Culicoides and BTVs, and to improve the efficiency and accuracy with which surveillance of insect vectors can be undertaken. These three elements of Culicoides biology were presented as three main themes of the thesis.
