About Matthew Abel

Risk is undoubtedly one of the principal inhibitors of change. As humans, we are inherently resistant to change because, despite the potential for growth and improvement, it comes with the uncertainty of outcomes, the potential for loss, and the discomfort of stepping into the unknown. However, it doesn't have to be this way. Risk management provides a mechanism through which enterprises can combat the adverse effects of change, reinstating the security and confidence needed to innovate. By systematically identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks, organizations can navigate the complexities of change more effectively, seizing new opportunities with a well-founded strategy and transforming risk into a catalyst for progress. This transformative power is the foundation upon which my interest in risk management (reinsurance and E&S, specifically) stands. Moreover, reinsurance/E&S encourages many of the values that are important to me. As a listener, I value perspectives and experiences that differ from my own. Listening allows me to account for these differences in my decision-making, thus enhancing communication and improving performance. As a tactician, I approach problem-solving strategically with a multi-stakeholder focus, leading to more robust and innovative solutions. Finally, as a learner, I leverage my innate curiosity to learn from others, as well as myself, continuously building my knowledge base and allowing me to problem-solve by taking informed action. Together, these traits enable me to develop strategies and solutions that not only address immediate challenges but also contribute to long-term sustainability and success. Beyond my professional aspirations and experiences, I love architecture, playing soccer and golf, listening to podcasts, watching documentaries, and talking to my friends and family! And while it occasionally ends in doughy disaster, I also enjoy baking pastries and other desserts! Finally, I'm passionate about developing communities in a myriad of ways, including fostering inclusion among the intellectual and developmental disability community.
