Matthew is an experienced architect who has worked in architectural practices since 1995. He has delivered numerous new build and refurbishment projects across a range of sectors, and strategic masterplans both regionally and internationally.His particular interest and specialism is in the design of academic and research led environments. He has developed major new build, adaptive re-use, and masterplan schemes in the UK and overseas for clients including The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, The Royal BC Museum, Canada, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and The State University of Haiti.He enjoys a collaborative approach to all project work, and when leading multi-disciplinary design teams, offering a wide range of technical and professional advice.

Matthew Burl joined John McAslan + Partners in 2000 to establish a Manchester studio with Tony Skipper. He was made Associate Director in 2007 and led and contributed to a wide range of urban design, campus masterplanning, cultural, educational and residential projects.Matthew’s Higher Education experience includes schemes for the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Hull. A series of masterplans for MMU’s seven campuses, including a development framework for Birley Fields in Hulme, and a new strategic vision for Manchester Science Park reflect his keen interest in sustainable campus planning.He led a multi-phased mixed use student accommodation development adjacent to the Higher Education precinct in the city of Leeds. The project delivers over 1,000 bedrooms for students including a 21-storey tower which presents a significant urban landmark, whilst enhancing the ground plane and completing the fourth side of a new public square.Matthew has completed Darwen Vale High School in Blackburn, which received a 2013 RIBA Award and is rated BREEAM Excellent. Also in Blackburn, he worked with both Tauheedul Islam Girls and Boys High Schools, creating new campuses to improve access to Muslim faith-based education.Most recently Matthew led the masterplan for the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, Canada to establish a new vision and long term strategy for the redevelopment of the Museum’s existing buildings and public realm. A commission with the Clinton Foundation for a new Faculty of Sciences building in Port-au-Prince, Haiti was the opportunity to establish new designs for rebuilding much needed teaching accommodation for the State University of Haiti.
