Profile bio

About Matthew Fenton

I make branding clear and actionable for leaders and teams who want to make a difference. So if you're leading a brand that wants to make a dent in the universe, I can help you get clear on what you stand for, who you’ll serve and how you'll win.I primarily do this via core brand strategy, competitive positioning, and messaging and story frameworks. These are guidance tools that will make your investments more effective and your team more focused.Fun fact: Yes, I am the guy who launched White Mystery Airheads.**That was a long time ago, and I’ve done a lot of cool stuff since. But I still apply what I learned on Airheads to my work today, namely:With clarity about what your brand stands for, respect for your consumers, and an appetite for intelligent risk-taking, you can punch above your weight. Some reasons to work with me:▶️ Because distinctive brands need distinctive strategies. I won’t hand you an off-the-shelf “solution.” Instead, we’ll dig deep. I’ll ask questions and listen. And I won’t formulate answers until I have the facts. (Crazy, I know, but it seems to work.)▶️ Because I’ve walked in your shoes. In each of my seven years in brand management, including two as CMO, I led brands to growth rates of 10x the category. I'm very comfortable doing more with less. And I'm trained as a P&L owner: "If it doesn't sell, it's bad branding."▶️ Because brand strategy requires a specialist. You wouldn’t hire the guy who paints your house to lay its foundation, right? They're different skills. I’m in the foundation-laying business. I work exclusively in core brand guidance. If your house needs a fresh coat of paint after that, I know some talented people who can help you. They’re just not on my payroll.▶️ Because your brand deserves top-level support and experience. There’s an old agency trick: “Win the account with senior staff, run the account with junior staff.” I have no junior staff; I handle every project personally. You’ll have my full attention and my 30+ years of experience at your disposal.▶️ Because my clients think you should. Since opening my doors in 1997, I’m proud that over 95% of my work has come from referral or repeat business, including leaders like Fidelity Investments, Valvoline and Wrigley. If you’re not peddling leads, a “unique franchising opportunity” or anything else, please say hello! I’m at matthew@threedeuce.com.**No, I won’t tell you what the flavor is. I don't want to get sued.

Vice-President Of Marketing

Farley'S & Sathers Candy Company

Greater Chicago Area

After 6 months of consulting, Farley's & Sathers, a Three Deuce Branding client, hired me as their Vice-President of Marketing. I had full marketing and P&L responsibility for the branded portfolio of the country’s 4th-largest confectioner (~$600mm annual sales).Working with limited resources (marketing investments were less than 1% of revenues during my tenure), my team and I achieved results including the following:• Brach’s (the company’s largest brand): 27% annual growth, over 10x the category growth rate and quickly reversing an 8-year decline. Notably, we added 17 incremental Brach's items to Walmart's April 2011 planogram.• Fruit Snacks portfolio: 25% annual growth, over 4x the category growth rate.• Seasonal portfolio: 15% annual growth (even from our starting point as the #1 non-chocolate seasonal manufacturer).• Trolli brand: Nearly 30% growth over 2 years, including turning Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers into the best-selling gummi in the country.Additional accomplishments:• Led successful new product innovation from ideation to market, including Trolli Big Bold Bears, winner of the Buyers’ Choice Award for "Best New Product" at the 2011 Sweets & Snacks Expo.• Led Brach’s, Trolli, Sathers and Now and Later to full restages, employing consumer insights, positioning, visual identity, package design, new product development, channel strategies, SKU rationalization, pricing and campaign development.• Represented Farley’s & Sathers management during 2010 transaction process.• Recruited and developed 10 marketing professionals in the company’s new Chicago office.
