I'm a historian of eighteenth-century architecture and visual culture. With a focus on early modern Europe and the Atlantic World, my scholarship examines architecture within an expanded field that looks beyond buildings to engage forms of spatial production that are in different ways lost, overlooked, or difficult to pin down. My current book project, Paper Monuments: Making Ephemeral Festival Architecture in Enlightenment France, examines how temporary pageant decorations shaped knowledge production and political relationships in enduring ways. I also co-lead the Equity in Memory and Memorial Project, which works to preserve and reinterpret enslaved burial grounds. My research has been supported by the American Philosophical Society, the John Carter Brown Library, and the Historians of Eighteenth-Century Art and Architecture. My writing appears in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Renaissance Quarterly, The Court Historian, and the edited volume, Material Cultures of the Global Eighteenth Century. While my research is anchored in the early modern world, I teach a variety of courses. These include global surveys of architecture that span from prehistory to the present as well as more specialized courses on topics like the history of interiors and the architectural history of social reform movements.
