I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Francis Marion University and Licensed Clinical Psychologist. I work, write, and teach in the areas of mental health, youth development, education, and social justice. Clinically, I have worked with children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and families from diverse backgrounds in the context of community mental health, academic medical, residential, university counseling, and private practice settings. I am proficient in assessing and treating a range of anxiety, mood, trauma, substance use, neurodevelopmental, and psychosis-spectrum disorders, as well as more general relationship, life transition, and identity concerns. My theoretical orientation and interventions integrate cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness/acceptance-based, and relational-cultural approaches. I currently see teletherapy clients part-time through the Center for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness. My program of research investigates the precedents, processes, and outcomes of intergenerational social support. Much of this work has focused on mentoring relationships between youth and nonparent adults – including those that are formally matched within volunteer and paraprofessional youth programs (e.g., Big Brothers Big Sisters), as well as those that arise organically within families, schools, extracurricular activities, and communities. Blending research and clinical interests, another line of my work explores the dissemination of evidence-based psychological interventions (e.g., motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness) via paraprofessional helpers as a strategy to bridge disparities in young people’s access to treatment. During graduate school, my research was supported by a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. I have published over 30 journal articles and book chapters. Check out my ResearchGate profile: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Matthew_HaglerBefore my doctorate, I graduated from Sewanee, the University of the South with a B.A. in psychology and English, completed a Fulbright Fellowship in Turkey, and worked as a project manager at the Life Paths Appalachian Research Center.
