After years as an engineering leader I found myself not understanding why things took so long and becoming disconnected with what it was like to be an engineer on a software development team. Once my team was in a stable place at VMware I asked to move into an individual contributor role. Before you ask – yes, It’s been fun to write code again. I’ve delivered new features such as HTTP/2 support, expanded role based access control and improved the scalability of our logging system.

Acquired! New leaders, new policies, new strategy. Change is hard but I'm proud of landing my team at VMware - integrating and changing where it made sense and preserving what made the team and product special.

As the team grew and I stepped into the senior director role I had to admit that I couldn’t fix everything myself. Luckily finding the right people and helping them lead their teams turned out to be even more rewarding than doing it myself. By the end I was leading 150 people across three offices delivering the flagship products that took Pivotal to an IPO.

I jumped into the Engineering Director role as my first leadership position beyond team lead and had to figure it out. We quickly launched our hosted Pivotal Web Services (PWS) then followed it up shortly with our on prem Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF). PCF took off with customers and we started growing the team and our scope as fast as we could. Along the way I learned how to hire and coach engineers and managers while empowering and guiding teams. Most importantly I learned how to balance empathy for engineers, the company and customers.
