I work as the customer data analyst for a group of companies, managing data relating to hundreds of thousands of customers and assets. My role is varied and continually developing, but the highlights below are constant throughout:• Data Quality management. I design rules and frameworks to ensure data quality standards are adhered to. I construct dashboards to monitor conformance, and to communicate improvement. I provide training on all aspects of data quality, entry and handling. • Business Intelligence and Transformation. I’m part of a continuous project to modernise how data is processed, accessed and interpreted. The goal is to provide self-service information to all levels of the business. Change management is a fundamental part of this, and much of my time is spent designing or delivering training packages. • Learning and Development. We’re using cutting edge technology, and so it’s necessary for me to continually develop to stay ahead of the curve, especially in the era of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). I provide training on what I’ve learned to help others keep ahead too.• Data Analysis. The reason why we do all the other things – to convert data into information. The focus of my role is to provide insight into what our customers are doing. This information is communicated through our BI tools (reports and interactive dashboards), so that others can compare their analysis with mine.• Data Architecture and Modelling. I design how data should be stored in our data warehouse (DWH) and how the data should flow between our systems. I design star and snowflake schemas, decide which data should be kept or discarded, and write code to transform the data. This is then documented and communicated across the group through seminars, so that no-one will need to ‘reinvent the wheel’.
