Epidemiologist
CurrentAustralia has among the highest incidence rates internationally of asbestos-related cancer. This is a particularly challenging research area due to the often poor prognosis following an asbestos cancer diagnosis and the lag time of up to 50 years between first asbestos exposure and disease occurrence. Working in a multidisciplinary translational research context, I am developing and implementing epidemiological research that aims to accurately measure the asbestos cancer trajectory in Australia and identify factors associated with improved prognosis.Key responsibilities: developing and leading epidemiological research projects to better understand the incidence and survival of malignant mesothelioma in Australia with the overall aim of prevention of asbestos-related disease. Key achievements: leading and publishing a descriptive epidemiological study of trends in incidence and survival for malignant mesothelioma in Australia over a 30-year period.Selected projects in progress: measurement of secondary primary cancers among those with a primary malignant mesothelioma; international comparison of age-specific trends in malignant pleural mesothelioma; measurements of incidence and trends of lung cancer in Australia; socio-demographic disparities in malignant mesothelioma treatment in New South Wales.
