I have served on the Pittsfield Township Planning Commission since 2010, and as its Chairman since 2011. The Planning Commission is responsible for reviewing and approving all new projects in the Township, developing and approving a master plan for township growth, and developing and reviewing Township codes and ordinances. Skills developed include the ability to effectively run meetings, manage contentious public forums with large numbers of participants, consensus decision-making, public speaking, and the ability to negotiate in a highly political environment.

During the real estate crash of 2008 I took advantage of the historically low prices and bought foreclosed homes in predominantly owner-occupied neighborhoods, establishing my own rental property business. Now comprised of three separate business units, each with multiple properties, I provide residential rentals in the areas surrounding Ann Arbor, Michigan. I developed skills in finance, negotiation, contract development, interviewing tenants, tax policy and complying with government regulations. I improved my house renovation skills passed onto me by my father who was a carpenter. All properties are fully paid off and rented to long-term tenants.

The study of martial arts is a major part of my life. For nearly fifty years now I have studied the arts, ranging from sport to classical budo to self-defense styles. I have been incredibly fortunate enough to have studied with several amazing world-class instructors with incredible technique who stressed harmony, humility, self-discipline, high standards of behavior, and never giving up or accepting defeat. I have instructed as well, and remember and treasure each and every student. Skills developed include coaching, mentoring, counselling, personal development, and understanding what motivates people and how to get the very best from them. In previous iterations of this section, I listed the details of what and how long I studied, however at this point in my journey I simply say that I am an ongoing student with much more to learn.

I analyzed supplier reports on product quality, and input information into one of the first supplier quality databases in the General Motors Oldsmobile Division. Quality efforts involved tracking part rejects, on-time delivery, and other performance parameters. I also contributed ideas on improving database performance and supplier analysis, and was instrumental in establishing a data backup system that saved and prevented the loss of highly valuable supplier quality data.

I assisted in the implementation of “Team Concept,” a General Motors initiative pioneered in the Buick Reatta Craft Centre and based on Deming’s Total Quality concept. Management and line workers were brought together with a “craft” product mindset to improve overall quality of automotive product. I developed a management paper based on extensive interviews of line workers and first line managers and presented the findings to plant management.
