Our mission is to bring people together to debate and prioritize innovative ideas to improve their communities. Our main goal is to help citizens get their voices heard and to encourage citizens participation in governance. The Citizens Foundation was founded in the aftermath of the Iceland’s economic and trust collapse in 2008. Since then we’ve developed open source tools and methods to promote online, democratic debate and to increase citizens’ participation in their community in Iceland and worldwide. Wanneer ontwikkelaars worden beloond met geld in plaats van een monopolie, kan de hele wereld daarvan profiteren, en komen nieuwe behandelmethoden en medicijnen direct terecht bij alle mensen die dat nodig hebben.De Piratenpartij wil investeren in goede publieke voorzieningen als zorg, wonen en onderwijs, zodat ieder kind gelijke kansen krijgt. Wij kiezen voor robuuste sociale zekerheid, die ervoor zorgt dat ook in crisistijd niemand in armoede hoeft te leven. Wij pakken marktmacht aan, zodat ook kleine ondernemers eerlijke kansen krijgen. Wij brengen broodnodige ICT-kennis de Tweede Kamer in, zodat ICT-fails zo snel mogelijk tot het verleden behoren. In een vrije democratie ga je uit van vrijheid en verantwoordelijkheid; van vertrouwen in mensen.De Piratenpartij gaat uit van vertrouwen in de mens, en van een gezond wantrouwen tegenover machtsconcentraties bij overheden en bedrijven. SELEMCA (Services for Electro-mechanical Care Agencies) focuses on the user-centered design of services that connect creative technologies such as agents, robots, ambient, and virtual worlds (“care agencies”) to patients, care professionals, and volunteer care providers. We envision the study of product-service systems (PSSs) for matchmaking between patient and care deliverers, for helping patients with medical-financial form filling, to help patients do exercises, and for monitoring medicine intake. In using existing technologies, we will create intelligent software agents and mechatronic robots (which we coin “Caredroids”) that serve as coaches and care providers for people who seek care, search for care services, who are hospitalized or residents of care centers and nursing homes.At the SELEMCA project, we will use the computational models of perception, emotion elicitation, emotion regulation and affective decision making I developed during my PhD research for developing the Caredroids.

Virtual Agents for Human Communication - Emotion Regulation and Involvement-Distance Trade-Offs in Embodied Conversational Agents and RobotsThus far, conversational agents and social robots were mainly developed from a technical point of view; e.g., ELIZA (Weizenbaum, 1966). The underlying model was almost lay theory, showing that smiles express happiness and frowns sadness (cf. Breazeal, 2002). Yet, most agents and robots fail conversation-wise because they cannot apply the right emotional response to the right situation. In this interdisciplinary research project, we will apply theories and models from mediated interpersonal communication, human-computer interaction and media psychology to embodied conversational agents. In doing so, the agents will be capable of social interaction and human-like communication. Ideally, theory and simulation should be so good that in a Turing Test (Turing, 1964), people will not be able to tell the difference. If there are significant differences, the experiments will show where the used theories and models have to be improved.
