    Engineering Scientist
Applied Research Laboratories, The University Of Texas At Austin Mar 2006 - Sep 2018
    Austin, Tx
    • Schematic and layout design of rugged circuit card assemblies ranging in complexity from two-layer polyimide flexible PCBs to 16-layer high-speed laminate PCBs: - Component selection (industrial temperature, crush-proof) - Low noise op amp filters and high-resolution audio ADCs - DC/DC POL voltage regulators - FPGA-based high-speed digital telemetry (10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, 10 Gb Ethernet, XAUI) - Power over Ethernet (PoE) - Atmel SAM3 and ATMega MCUs and standard communications protocols (USB, UART, I2C, SPI) - Controlled impedance traces and PCB PDN design• Board bring-up and troubleshooting• Conducted and participated in electrical design reviews• Embedded Linux and U-Boot bootloader development: - Ported to two integrated processor-based custom computers• Worked closely with several cross-functional teams, usually simultaneously: - System architect - Drafting and mechanical engineering - Software engineering - Contract PCB layout, manufacturing, and assembly shops - In-house electrical and mechanical technicians - Purchasing - Quality Assurance• Production-level engineering documentation: - Produced, checked, and signed off as Lead EE - Initiated design revisions • Wiring harness design• Managed electrical design software portfolio: - Annual maintenance contract renewal - Created and maintained Wiki page documenting floating license setup procedure - Acquired new software as-needed, including BluePrint-PCB, which dramatically increased quality and speed of PCB production documentation• Sustaining activities: - Recommended equivalent replacements for obsolete components to manufacturing - Diagnosed field failures• Supervised one junior EE and several EE interns - Solicited input for and conducted annual employee reviews• Built and administered my own computer workstation• Comfortable using BASH and Python scripting languages
  • Applied Research Laboratories, The University Of Texas At Austin
    Engineering Scientist Associate
Applied Research Laboratories, The University Of Texas At Austin Dec 2001 - Feb 2006
    Austin, Tx
I developed expertise in applying signal integrity design principals to achieve first-pass success on high-speed digital electronics designs. I was the principal designer for multiple environmentally-rugged PCBs that transitioned from prototypes to full-scale production via private-sector Contract Manufacturing partners.
  • Applied Research Laboratories, The University Of Texas At Austin
    Student Intern
Applied Research Laboratories, The University Of Texas At Austin Jun 2000 - Dec 2001
    Austin, Texas, United States
As a Student Intern for ARL:UT, I ported a C++ FFT library from MMX for Intel x86 to AltiVec for Motorola PowerPC and conducted performance benchmarks. The AltiVec FFT library was used by ARL:UT researchers to realize dramatic signal processing performance gains over the previous MMX implementation.I was also responsible for the design and implementation of a single-board computer (SBC) based on the Motorola MPC8245 Integrated Host Processor. The SBC was later used in an Advanced Development Model (ADM) of an HF Sonar Array for an unmanned platform. The SBC design effort included schematic capture and component selection, coordinating PCB design and assembly through a third-party vendor, porting U-Boot bootloader and Linux Board Support Package (BSP) code, and hardware bring-up and troubleshooting.
