  Matt’s work on intellectual property disputes includes: • Securing a string of “blockbuster” wins for Warner Bros. in long-running copyright litigation concerning Superman, and representing the studio in a variety of other matters, including disputes related to Gravity, Lord of the Rings, and the Harry Potter franchises. • Defending a major television network in a copyright class action challenging the use of music on television. • Representing various clients—including skin care, apparel, and media companies—in trademark and false advertising cases. • Representing videogame developers in a variety of disputes, including helping secure a nine-figure settlement in a contract, patent, trade-secret, and copyright case. Matt’s work on international disputes includes: • Defending Unocal in cases arising out of Myanmar, including before the U.S. and California Supreme Courts, foreign investigations in several countries, and an alter-ego bench trial. • Handling other Alien Tort Statute and related cases involving claims in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. • Handling international arbitrations (including in the International Chamber of Commerce), and investigations in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa. Matt’s work on water issues includes:• Advising companies on water rights issues, including new sources of rights, water transfers, limits on groundwater rights, and proof of concept of new water businesses. Matt’s trial, appellate, and arbitration work also includes: • Defending Jeff Skilling, the former CEO of Enron. Matt’s work, as a primary brief writer for the team, included Mr. Skilling’s victory in the U.S. Supreme Court. • An arbitration for a leading consumer electronic company, in which Matt’s client prevailed on its contract claims and defeated fraud and mistake counterclaims. • Defending a major clothing maker against a libel action. Matt has extensive experience in First Amendment cases, including under Anti-SLAPP law.
