Matt Hancock helps organizations develop ownership cultures that are inclusive, resilient, and innovative. His core areas of focus are: Leadership Development, Strategy, Change Management, Continuous Improvement, Employee Owner Education and Communications, Group Process Design and Facilitation, Labor-Management Collaboration and Interest-Based Problem Solving/Bargaining.In addition to employee-owned firms, Matt has extensive experience working with labor-management partnerships and non-profit organizations in the United States and the European Union.Prior to joining Praxis, Matt co-founded Chicago Tech Academy (ChiTech), Chicago’s first technology-focused high school. Matt began his career in Bologna, Italy, where he earned a Master’s in Cooperative Economics from the University of Bologna (Italy). He authored a book, Compete toCooperate, about the cooperative movement there. A member of the European Organisation Design Forum, Matt holds a BA in history from Skidmore College, a Green Belt in Lean/Six Sigma and is the past Chair of The ESOP Association’s Ownership Culture Committee.

American CBA; negotiated items included production leveling, guaranteeing greater schedule predictability, jointly setting new production rates and integrating progressive approach to discipline-Assisted unionized employees in articulating their interests and engaging autonomously in an organization-wide strategic-planning process at a major non-profit legal services organization-Conducted leadership development programs aimed at helping leaders drive organizational performance through high-engagement practices-Created training programs to assist rank-and-file employees in understanding their companies' financial statements by connecting the numbers on the P&L to their lived experience at work

The Foundation has raised and donated millions of dollars to collect data used by academics, encourage objective research, and to facilitate dialogue about employee ownership between thought leaders. Going forward, the Foundation will also place a larger emphasis on raising awareness of the employee ownership model among business owners and to fund more applied research that can further improve the market advantage held by well-run employee owned businesses.

Responsible for managing school leadership, Board of Directors, fundraising, corporate partnerships and volunteer engagement.Accomplishments:-Raised $1.7 million from corporate and individual donors, providing school with a sustainable base of funding to drive organizational growth from a staff of 13 and a budget of $200,000, to a staff of 50 and a budget of $4.7 million-Led organization through major change processes, including Board of Director development, successful renewal of school contract with Chicago Public Schools, on-boarding of new school management team and development of a strategic partnership with High Tech High charter network to enhance academic and college-persistence outcomes -Drove creation of a collaborative culture of ownership--through self-managed work teams and an organization-wide goal sharing program--that enabled increased employee engagement, resulting in more effective problem solving, superior outcomes and lower-than-industry-average staff turnover-Developed partnerships with 100 technology companies in the Chicago-area, ensuring a diverse base of corporate funding to support ChiTech’s mission, creating a volunteer base to provide mentorships and internships for students and curricular input to keep school’s tech program at the cutting edge

Redesigned Center’s business plan that led to the successful start-up and sustained funding model for an engineering-focused high school and growth of labor-business partnerships.Accomplishments:-Project-managed winning RFP for Chicago Public Schools, which allowed Center to create Austin Polytechnical Academy High School, in collaboration with Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council-Raised $1.1 million to support school launch, development and staffing of career program and implementation of Project Lead the Way, a nationally-recognized pre-engineering curriculum-Developed partnerships with 50 area manufacturers to support education and job training initiatives, providing school with an advisory council to ensure the development of a state-of-the-art machining program and students with hands-on internship opportunities-Trusted liaison to key constituencies in business, labor, government and education sectors, allowing the expansion of the organization’s signature coalition: the Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council

Accomplishments:-Collaborated with major European institutes, labor unions and manufacturers on EU-funded research into cluster-based economic development models, supply chain integration and new forms of work organization as a source of sustained competitive advantage-Conducted Rapid Plant Assessments and interviews with executives and shop-floor workers in diverse production environments, from automotive to agribusiness-Crafted SWOT analyses; participated in extended supply chain analyses in automotive and agribusiness sectorsProjects included work in packaging machinery, fluid dynamics, automotive, agricultural equipment, plastics and food manufacturing clusters as well as regional innovation policy.
