About Matt Payne

My name is Matt Payne, and I’m a nature/landscape photographer based in Durango, Colorado. Over the years, my path has led me to a deep relationship with nature that defines both my work and my lifestyle. I was raised in Colorado and spent much of my childhood outdoors, exploring the rugged mountains surrounding me. Those early days instilled a fascination with nature and an unbreakable bond with the wilderness, and they ultimately inspired me to dedicate myself to capturing the landscape in a way that reflects both its grandeur and its fragility.Photography didn’t always come first for me. I initially approached these landscapes as a climber and mountaineer, eager to explore and conquer Colorado’s iconic fourteeners. I spent countless hours navigating these landscapes, driven by a passion for the heights and the challenges they posed. But somewhere along the line, my relationship with the mountains shifted. I realized that instead of just summiting peaks, I wanted to capture the beauty that had been inspiring me all along. Photography offered me that outlet, allowing me to share my experiences with others and convey the immense scale, isolation, and magic of these remote places.I strive to capture landscapes in ways that are truthful and ethical. In recent years, I’ve become more vocal about the importance of responsible editing and avoiding deceptive practices. Nature has a natural beauty that doesn’t need to be exaggerated, and my aim is always to honor that beauty. I strongly advocate for conservation and feel a deep responsibility to protect these landscapes and promote ethical photography practices. As photographers, we hold a lot of power in presenting nature, and I believe that respecting the land should always come first.Through my podcast, “F-Stop Collaborate and Listen,” I connect with other photographers and industry leaders across the globe. The podcast has become a way for me to dive into meaningful conversations about photography, ethics, and the challenges we face in an era of rapid environmental change. It’s also a space for me to explore and showcase a range of perspectives within the photography community, from established names to emerging voices. These discussions have not only influenced my own work but have fostered a broader understanding of our collective responsibility as photographers.I lead workshops for Muench Workshops full-time and absolutely love photography!
