I can remember a time in my life where I would just make things...As a child, it seemed as though I was happiest when I would come home from school everyday + sit on my bedroom floor with a large bankers box of Legos that I kept hidden in my closet. This box was comprised of various pieces originating from hundreds of sets my parents had purchased in my honor for birthdays + Christmas’s past - pretty much any time of the year where gifting was the norm. I would take the set, build what was depicted on the cover + immediately deconstruct it, discarding the contents into my coveted bankers box for future exploration. My mother + father would always say [or rather lament] that it was my propensity for abstract thought that would keep me locked away in my room for hours with said box of Legos - never following the directions, exploring the possibilities outside of what was on the cover of those boxes...I only knew that I liked to make things.Ultimately these pursuits in lego abstraction would lead me to obtaining both a Bachelor’s + Master’s degree in the field of Architecture from the University of Florida, which, if we’re being honest, were just as much “Degrees in Masochism” as they were in my chosen field of study. I think that any person who has gone through design school could attest to this notion. Nevertheless, for those six years I worked relentlessly, loved what I did + made it through the gauntlet with my diplomas in hand ready for the next step. It is now seven years since I walked the stage at my graduation + said diplomas currently live on the floor of my old bedroom at my parent’s house, framed but not hung, next to that old box of legos.Someday I will find a place to hang them, but I just have never really felt finished...I just know that I like to make things.
