MATT SHERIDAN combines the mediums of abstract painting and video with the aim of relocating, redefining and rematerializing meaning in the age of the algorithm. His abstract “painting-in-motion” video installations and paintings address contemporary power relations between handmade physical reality and the click + drag mentality. By visualizing states of mind and moving them through architecture, across canvas and into sculptures, Sheridan’s work explores how instinct is enhanced, affected and distorted by digital video environments. Sheridan received his BFA from NYU/Tisch School of the Arts and his MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. A recipient of numerous awards, grants and fellowships, he exhibits globally across five continents -- recently in Brazil, Japan and Australia. Sheridan’s videos and paintings are in private collections in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Sydney and Brisbane. In 2017 his work was included in a group exhibition and publication by South Korea's CICA Museum; in 2018 Sheridan was named a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grantee, in 2019 he had solo exhibitions at CICA Museum and TWFINEART in Brisbane. Sheridan has two upcoming solo exhibitions in 2024. In July, La Napoule Art Foundation on France's Cote d'Azur presents The Lingering Lovers, curated by Nelcy Mercier. Edited from in-situ animated projections around the LNAF chateau, this experimental short about long-deceased expatriate artists Henry and Marie Clews, uses their own words in conversation as their avatars dance across their chateau's towers. The exhibition also includes photos, sketches and video art derived from the short film's production. September 2024 Sheridan will show abstract paintings and video animations in Modulations and Modularities, curated by Lindsay Kessner at College of the Redwoods' Floyd Bettiga Gallery.for examples:
