Principal Engineer

Current

San Francisco, California, Us

I lead the Systems Infrastructure team at Nextdoor and serve as the primary cloud architect. In the last 12+ years I have helped guide Nextdoor through its growth from thousands of users to tens of millions. Throughout that time we have built a Systems team that is ruthlessly focused on automation, efficiency and resiliency. “Automate it, or it doesn’t count” is our team motto.

Nov 2011 - Present

Systems Architect

Los Gatos, Ca, Us

Served as the Systems Architect for Qwikster's Datacenter-based-services - this includes both Operations and Corporate infrastructures from a Systems, Networking and Software Configuration perspective.I’ve designed and implemented all new key infrastructure components to support the new business unit. Configuration management throughout the datacenter using Puppet, a new internal private cloud hosted on Xen using CloudStack and RightScale for management, and all new development and software distribution tools. In addition to the software and virtualization infrastructure, I lead a complete redesign in how Qwikster (the Netflix DVD Division) looked at storage in the datacenter. Migrated from high end IBM SANs to more general purpose NetApp SAN, NAS and iSCSI systems leading to millions in savings, as well as greater flexibility in the infrastructure.(October 2010 -> June 2011: Senior Systems Engineer)Working within the IT Operations team at Netflix, I was responsible for several significant changes to the systems management infrastructure in the two primary Datacenters as well as systems that run within external clouds (AWS, Rackspace). I lead a number of key infrastructure projects including internal cloud (with Eucalyptus and Cloud.com) implementations, implementing internal software build systems for custom packages, datacenter bare-metal kickstart system for new systems deployment as well as deployment tools and images for external Cloud providers. Most notably, I was the primary architect of our Puppet management framework. This framework now allows for new systems to be installed in minutes, and fully configured with a well documented and implemented class structure. At last count, this system was managing over 1200 Linux servers within the Netflix Datacenter Environment.

Oct 2010 - Oct 2011

Sr. Systems Engineer

San Jose, California, Us

I spent my last year at Logitech working to build the IT Innovations Team at Logitech. This team is responsible for managing all engineering and service-oriented systems/networks/datacenters within the Logitech business units. This team manages several large VMWare farms for engineering, Amazon EC2 server farms for production systems as well as dedicated hardware racks for significant production services for Logitech customers. Some of my projects have included: - Full Datacenter-wide Network and SAN reorganization. Implemented industry-standard cabling guidelines and patch panels (fiber and cat6). Console management systems, monitored and managed PDUs, etc. - Designed and implemented in-house VMWare ESXi stateless PXE-Boot system. System allows for near-instant provisioning of new ESXi systems, as well as replacement of failed hardware extremely quickly. - Design/implement Multi-location SAN-to-Ethernet backup solution for large VMWare deployment. - Architected and implemented configuration management system (Puppet) to manage local and remote datacenter Linux/Mac OSX hosts. - Implement software build environment with continuous build integration used across Logitech’s three largest Business Units. - Design and Implement Splunk Data Logging system for all production servers. In addition, I worked closely with engineering teams within each Logitech business unit to provide customized engineering resources to each team as needs arise. I worked with these teams closely to provide any engineering resources that they might need (code repositories, automated build systems, etc) as well as to help guide their engineering choices for future production devices and systems.

Systems And Software Configuration Engineer

San Jose, California, Us

Responsible for management of pre-Logitech-acquisition infrastructure in local offices as well as remote data centers. Infrastructure included community driven websites, bug tracking systems, forums, mailing lists and subversion repositories. Also included public facing websites for direct-to-consumer sales. Planned and implemented project to live-migrate these services into IT-supported systems near zero customer or developer downtime. Implemented continuous integration build system to provide up-to-the-minute packages of each product for faster development cycles. Worked with vendor to develop custom features in the software platform based on the needs of the Streaming Media team. Migrated entire local datacenter from dedicated physical machines into VMWare ESXi 4.0 server farm. Greatly expanded server and service capacity in local datacenter while significantly lowering power and cooling costs. Implemented all new Linux (Redhat and Debian) packages of our Squeezebox Server software products as well as custom ReadyNas packages. Primary developer for all Squeezebox Server build scripts.

Oct 2007 - Nov 2009

Sr. Systems Engineer/Department Manager

Santa Clara, California, Us

At AMD I was responsible for the AMD Developer Center. This center was built in early 2003 and has served as AMDs primary testbed for application and operating system tuning on AMD CPUs and platforms. My responsibilities included designing, implementing and managing the systems and networks that served the network for this testbed. In addition to maintaining the centers infrastructure itself, I was responsible primarily for deploying all of the customer test-systems. I lead the design and implementation of several Top500-ranked super-computers that were used in this test lab for benchmarking HPC applications. This included spec’ing the motherboards, CPUs, RAM, Network and Interconnect gear for each cluster as well as the actual installation of the entire software stack for these clusters. In 2005 I moved into the Manager role and provided both the technical and marketing leadership for our team. I worked with AMDs close vendors and other technical contacts to continue to provide the latest-generation of hardware within the center for testing with our customers. I provided technical direction for a small team of Sr. level systems administrators who became responsible for the day-to-day operation of the center as well as working directly with the test lab customers on their benchmarking projects.
