About Maurits Van Selms

After studying dentistry for one year at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Maurits Karel Adriaan van Selms (1974) started in 1995 the study dentistry at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). The route toward becoming a dentist was blocked when the neuromuscular disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was diagnosed in 1998. Fortunately, he was selected for a PhD project. Since he obtained his PhD degree in 2007, Maurits has been tenured as researcher, and he has supervised dozens of students, including several PhD students. His scientific research currently focuses primarily on the relationships of pain-related temporomandibular disorders with psychological (e.g., stress, depression) and physical (e.g., bruxism, playing a musical instrument) overloading, and on the topic of oral health in patients with ALS. Maurits is (co)-author of more than 50 international peer-reviewed publications, and he has an h-index of 17 (Web of Science, all databases, November 2024).
