My main tasks as a patent examiner are the establishment of a search report on patent applications filed under the European Patent Convention (EPC) and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), their substantive examinations, and the grant of a patent, or the refusal of the application, in accordance with the legal provisions of the EPC, in the field of Computer-Implemented Inventions (CII). The purpose of the search is to find the most relevant technical disclosures (”prior art”) against which the patentability of the application can be assessed. Substantive examination enables the applicant to be informed of any objections to the grant of a patent, with a view to resolving these through correspondence and, where necessary, oral proceedings.I am also a member of the classification team which assign relevant prior art publications to the classes of the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) system which is used by 38 patent offices worldwide. Finally, I am also an appointed Diversity & Inclusion promoter at the EPO. My role is to engage in discussions around Diversity and Inclusion with colleagues and management, collect ideas, support D&I networks, promote D&I initiatives and exchange on best practices. I am also one of the contact person for the internal "Special Needs Network", a staff led group whose purpose is to offer support to colleagues living with a disability (their own and/or of someone they care for) or a mental/physical chronic condition.
