The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Residential Learning Community is a program for women who are first and second year students interested in STEM fields. Members of this community live on the same floor, take a common seminar course, and participate in specialized programming. The goal of the WISE program is to increase the retention of women in STEM fields by creating a support network and community for those involved.As a WISE Peer Mentor, I am assigned 13 incoming freshman who are part of the WISE program and am responsible for providing these women with resources and support as they navigate their early college career. I do this through quarterly meetings and regular checkins throughout the semester. I alongside the 11 peer mentors collaborate on ideas, manage logistics, and run events for members. As a peer mentor, I am responsible for facilitating connections between members and faculty guests during weekly seminar dinners.

Leidos is a large corporation based in Reston, VA that provides scientific, engineering, systems integration, and technical services. As an intern for Leidos, I worked full time with two other interns on a project, contracted by the DOD, that spanned my three months. It was the first time that I had been able to focus solely on one project for an extended period of time. I strengthened my skills building Java software and gained experience creating code that adheres to a team-wide frame-work and quality standard.

As an intern at 8th light, I worked along side experienced crafters to develop projects that are designed to cultivate skills in Test Driven Development and Object Oriented Programming. I developed projects both individually, only collaborating with other interns to solve problems, as well as on a team of interns where we practiced agile programing techniques to debug and add features to an existing server. When working with a team we practiced pair programming to complete small sub-projects.Throughout the internship, I was responsible for reading technical books, such as Practical Object Oriented Programming in Ruby and Understanding the Four Rules of Simple Design, writing technical blog posts teaching the skills I learned through my experience, and presenting to the company on such topics.

I worked in a team of twenty student researchers under Anna Kaatz the Principle Investigator for the lab. The purpose of the lab was to research gender and racial biases within the medical health department through text mining and analysis using machine learning technology.In contribution to the research, I was designed and implemented web scraper software for data collection imperative for further research. I aided in researching and sharing techniques of analyzing text data using artificial intelligence technology with the team. I collaborated with team members at weekly teem meetings to solve problems in current research and brainstorm new research methods and projects.
