I speak fluent Arabic and English at a bilingual proficiency level. Although Spanish is my B language due to the lack of regular use, I can hold a good conversation in it. My MA practical dissertation was the translation and critical analysis of a tourist text/website from the Spanish language into English. This has given me the essential means to enhance my linguistic and translational skills at a professional level. During my MA programme at the University of Manchester I worked with Arabic and Spanish texts and their English translations and engaged in theoretical and practical approach to these texts. I spoke Spanish fluently at different stages of my life while I was navigating the world. That’s when I lived in different Spanish speaking countries. I consider myself a multilingual and a cultural communicator as I not only speak Arabic, I also speak and understand all the different Arabic dialects. Furthermore, because I have lived in so many different countries and continents, this has given me the advantage of being open to different peoples and cultures. I was born in Baghdad, Iraq and at the age of one traveled to Caracas, Venezuela where I lived for three years. I then lived in Nairobi, Kenya for two years and studied in an English pre-school over there, home to international students. After going back to Baghdad I then traveled again to South America to the beautiful city of Buenos Aires, Argentina and lived for two years and studied at the British school, 'Belgrano Day School'. There, I studied half of the subjects in Spanish and the other half in English. During my life as a ‘nomad’ I spoke Arabic at home, Spanish and English at school. My next stop after going back to Iraq was Brasil. I lived in the capital city of Brasila for two years and studied at the American school of Brasilia 'Escola Americana do Brasilia'. Along with all the subjects being taught in English, we studied Portuguese as a second language which I eventuallymastered after having lived there for two years. After Brasil I moved to Spain and ended up staying there for three years where I studied at an international school. I then attended my first year of university at 'Schiller American University of Madrid'. Sadly, my Portuguese was soon replaced by Spanish. Nevertheless, I realised during a recent visit to Portugal that I could still speak good Portuguese and also that this language never left me. After Spain I moved back to my birthplace and went on to study my BA in English Literature at the University of Baghdad where I also studied French as a second language.
