Originally trained as an Electronics Engineer - spent six years in the Merchant Navy as a Radio/Electronics Officer. Joined the UK Meteorological Office, completed initial forecaster training then specialised in Marine Systems Engineering due to my previous electronics experience.Became an expert in Automatic Weather Systems for ships. After installing and setting up various systems decided that I could design something far better and less expensive.Developed the 'MetPod' system www.metpod.co.uk which has been successfully tested by the UK Met Office. Uses an embedded processor, customer choice of sensors and Iridium Satellite transceiver in a compact package. Easy to install and reliable.Based at Wattisham Flying Station providing meteorological advice and guidance to Apache helicopter crew. Specialist in tactical decision aid tools, in particular thermal detection capability in real life conditions.Achieved RMetS Registered Meteorologist (RMet) accreditation in May 2016 and FRMetS July 2019.Joined the Post Processing (weather science team) as a Python developer on a 50/50 basis in July 2016. We are developing a new generation of NWP post processing tool chain called 'Improver'. The project is open source and hosted on Github.
