Set up the company’s first formal system for generation of hull performance reports with an in-house database and user-friendly front-end. Utilised the many features of MySQL, e.g. constraints on unique records, stored procedures for processing raw data and foreign keys relating reference data to KPI’s.Transitioned from largely manual reports based on Excel plots and calculations to an automated solution using MATLAB and it’s Database toolbox.Drove development of the code over several years as more customers were on-boarded and demands on the system soared.Co-authored a paper for the HullPIC 2019 conference describing a novel regression-based approach to hull performance analysis, based on the MATLAB Deep Learning toolbox. Lead the development and testing of the code. Pursued machine learning further with the Coursera online course.Collaborated daily with own team to find the right balance between user-friendliness, performance and development time. Critical new features included a process to streamline the standardisation of vessel performance data, no matter how messy, and a front end built in Python PyQT which greatly eased the manual process of filtering and selecting data.Conveyed the message behind the data to stakeholders across many functions and levels of data literacy. Aligned with internal stakeholders to understand specific goals of analyses before helping navigate often difficult conversations with customers, e.g. on the reasons for lower-than-expected performance or the inadequacy of their data for the analysis method.Helped strengthen relationships with customers through continuous monitoring, reporting, feedback and improvement. While regular updates and performance alerts were growing the customers’ confidence, my openness to their perspectives and acceptance of criticism enabled improvement of the analysis and reports over the longer term. Marine engineer engaged in computational and experimental hydrodynamic modelling of the company’s wave energy converter, resource assessment and software development.Analysed the company’s wave energy converter device in hydrodynamic simulations, providing critical data at every step of the design. After independently learning how to set up and run simulations in ANSYS AQWA, I expanded my knowledge of wave hydrodynamics to include radiation/diffraction analysis and non-linear material properties of mooring cables, among others. Provide insights, as well as result data, to the rest of the design team.Investigated larger models were in finite-element simulations such as Orcaflex and Flexcom.Verified the design with scale models at a number of wave tanks. Oversaw team of five students in university collaboration at Heriot-Watt, then the FloWave facility at the University of Edinburgh. After contributing to the physical build of the models and deployment at the facility, made a comparative study between scale and simulation, which both informed further model development and helped instil investor confidence.Assessed the resource potential of a number of sites with the company’s wave measurement buoys. Responsible for data retrieval, maintenance and occasionally coordinating operations to retrieve wayward buoys.Calculated operational parameters from site measurements and device simulations, including expected annual yield and the one-hundred year loading on mooring cables.Standardised data from many sources into a common format, NetCDF, using the variable dimensions of the format to easily relate the effect of any environmental parameter with any design parameter. Wrote code to save simulations results in this format, after parsing from messy text file outputs.
