In addition to supervising the patrol personnel, detectives and civilian personnel assigned to the office, responsibilities included representing the Sheriff’s Office and county government at community association meetings and community functions. Reviewing Index Crimes, particularly property crimes, was a primary duty. Responsible for oversight of detectives' case loads, proactively addressing crime trends and reducing Part I crimes and increasing case clearance rate. Oversaw development of scrap metals initiative by developing partnerships with local and regional scrap metals dealers to target illicit trafficking in stolen metals, developed and supervised detective position to coordinate the initiative. Successfully partnered with stake holders in effort to enact effective legislation to regulate scrap metals industry. Construction site thefts and auto thefts reduced significantly and property recovery increased. Partnered with Levy and Citrus Counties to for a joint property crimes and scrap metals intelligence sharing group. Member of Florida Governor's Sterling Award committee. Developed and presented materials to the Governor’s Sterling Award examiners in Customer Service and Performance Results categories. In May 2008, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was the awarded the Florida Governor’s Sterling Award and is the first law enforcement agency to receive the award. Used Florida Sterling customer service concept to deliver premier service to the community. Employed strategic planning to develop goals and objectives as well as measure how successfully the mission was accomplished.

Acting District Commander. Assigned to take temporary command of the Marion Oaks District Office. This district was experiencing rapid growth and an increase in construction theft, gang and drug crime activity. The Marion Oaks District is a diverse community, including large Hispanic and Asian population components. In addition to supervising the patrol personnel, detectives and civilian personnel assigned to the office, responsibilities included representing the Sheriff’s Office and county government at community association meetings, MSTU Tax Board meetings and other community functions. Helped organize a region wide construction theft task force, organized local initiative to target construction theft through public and industry cooperative efforts and education.

Returned to Patrol Bureau as Uniform Patrol Sergeant. Responsible for field operations and supervision of Patrol Deputies in one of the geographic sectors of Marion County. In addition to supervision of line personnel, responsible for deployment of specialty resources such as K-9, Aviation, Traffic Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Underwater Recovery, Bomb Squad and Mobile Field Force when needed. Responsible for monitoring in service training and advanced training of the Patrol Deputies in assigned sector as well as evaluating their job performance. Coordinated cases with detectives and initiated proactive operations in problem areas. In this time period, also assigned as Patrol Training Supervisor.

Unit restructured, new personnel trained and new equipment and facilities obtained. Arrest and seizure statistics during this period increased. Integrated Patrol resources in many tactical and community policing operations thereby enhancing both Patrol and Drug Unit statistics and results. Improved relations with municipal police agencies and included them in joint operations. Negotiated agreement with Florida Department of Law Enforcement to include them in local operations. Supervised preparation and execution of search warrants, field operations and long term investigations. Responsible for oversight of operational and confidential informant funds as well as maintaining confidential informant files.

The Levy County Sheriff's Office is in transition and the incumbent Sheriff retiring. The campaign focused on improving results, efficiency, better performance and accountability as imperative to the future of the Levy County Sheriff's Office. The campaign accomplished key goals of promoting candidate recognition and generating public discussion of significant issues.

Began at Lee County Sheriff’s Office part time while attending Davidson College. Hired full time in September 1980 and assigned as Patrol Deputy. Advanced to Property Crimes Detective in July 1983 and as Sergeant in the Homicide Unit in June 1984.
