Researched and drafted memoranda related to the strength of asylum-seekers’ appeals where claims for refugee recognition had been rejected, reviewing claims under South Africa’s The Refugees Act to analyze a potential legal basis for refugee recognition and using the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees guidance to assess if the law was properly applied according to the 1951 Refugee Convention and 1967 Protocol. Wrote an affidavit for an asylum-seeker’s appeal and a representation on behalf of an asylum-seeker to begin the appeal process. Assisted over twenty recognized refugees with the permanent residence application. Consulted with at least one client a day during intake hours, listening for the relevant facts of their legal issues, asking questions for clarity, and reviewing the issues with an attorney to identify and communicate next steps.
