Working in a disaster-recovery programme in Nepal, rebuilding a school following disaster-resilient norms. My role included:• Coordinating volunteers before and on programme, working closely with the construction team to meet the needs of the programme timeline• Providing training sessions on community-led disaster risk reduction and other engagement activities• Working closely with the Operations Manager on various tasks, and the Health and Safety Officer as first aider• Building collaborative relationships with volunteers and act according to their feedback This experience provided me with precious insights into resilient buildings, programme management in disaster recovery settings, inter-cultural team work and communication. The tight timeline and limited budget also furthered my capacity to work under pressure.

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, Stand by Me Lesvos took a capacity-building approach by creating and supporting self-organised teams of asylum-seekers. I touched upon very varied areas, which gave me a wide appreciation of grassroot NGO management. I actively participated in:• Coordinating a project in education• Administrative work (creating Excel database for sponsors, team members, support requests from schools)• Collecting testimonies from refugees, co-running the Do Not Leave Me Behind page, producing posts for the different pages • Translation of COVID-19 updates for a refugee audience and refugees’ testimonies• Blog and newsletter writing• Campaign planning on World Refugee Day, advocating for the importance of children’s perspectives• Co-running the online account to collect donations, updating fundraising strategies on the websiteHowever, what made this experience invaluable was the variety of individuals at Stand by Me Lesvos. I learned from each of them, both from self-organised teams and staff-members. The ever-changing and dynamic context sustained a result-based approach to immediate needs, beyond individuals.

All Hands Together aims for community capacity building. We hold empowerment and equity at heart. Throughout the founding process, I developed charity management skills and worked on the legal and financial dimensions, as well as the development of the core values.My main current role is project coordination. This involves planning projects and campaigns, coordinating volunteers, logistics, working with other charities and monitoring results.Following the fire in Moria Camp, we collected clothes and blankets. As part of our project for refugee education, we are supporting self-organised schools and co-running classes. As we value participation and the ripple effect of capacity building, we provide training for volunteers.
