Profile bio

About Megan Mccarty

I am a lepidopterist and nature photographer who just happens to work for a company developing software for NASA. My passion has always revolved around insects and the natural world, but I have since found that my curiosity, creativity, and love of learning transfer beautifully from all-things lepidopterology to the wonderful world of coding. I primarily work on the frontend using HTML, CSS/Sass, vanilla JavaScript, and Angular, but I also dabble with Python, Django, Wagtail, Docker, WordPress, and AWS. I have also developed a desire to improve the accessibility of the applications I create so that they are accessible and inclusive to all, and I am currently studying to obtain my CPACC and WAS certifications.

Listed skills include Python, Git, Javascript, Django, and 3 others.

Senior Software Engineer

Icf

Springfield, Va, Us

Software Developer

Alexandria, Virginia, United States

In my current role as a Software Developer, I continue to work primarily on frontend development across multiple projects. I have since become very comfortable using Angular and vanilla JavaScript for the frontend of our applications, and I have continued to deepen my collaboration with our designer when considering the accessibility and usability of the applications we build.Accessibility has become a passion of mine, so much so that I gave a presentation at my company about ways to fix very common accessibility issues present on most websites. After my presentation, I was thrilled to learn that some of our backend developers not only found accessibility issues within our CMS, but that they took actions to address them (despite frontend development not being their forte)! I have since become my company's unofficial accessibility expert, though I still have a lot to learn!

Junior Software Developer

Alexandria, Va

During my time as a Junior Software Developer, I primarily contributed to the frontend development of one of our newest projects using vanilla JavaScript, Sass, and HTML. I built the entire frontend of an application based on our designer's mockups, and I learned how to collaborate and contribute to the design process to improve usability and accessibility (which was very important for meeting Section 508 compliance). I also built a JavaScript test suite to automate the testing of all of the custom vanilla JavaScript code that I wrote. However, despite my love of frontend coding, I also made backend and infrastructure contributions. Along with others on my team, I helped set up GitHub Actions to automate the CI/CD process and deploy our code into AWS. I got my hands dirty with AWS CloudFormation templates, and I set up a series of Makefile commands to generate Sphinx documentation, compile our Sass to CSS, and watch for changes to our Sass files. I even configured S3 to properly store media that was uploaded via our CMS (Wagtail), an accomplishment I was extremely proud of given my inexperience with AWS infrastructure.Lastly, because I enjoy demoing and the challenge of presenting to a non-technical audience, I became our team's unofficial demo person. I would demo our project's progress at the end of each sprint in front of our clients and stakeholders, which was always very rewarding. I even presented our team's project during the NASA Library Network's biennial Library Face-to-Face, which cemented our team's stellar reputation amongst the NASA library community.

Barista

Arlington, Va

I worked part-time as a Barista, where I not only prepared food and beverages to our customers, but also helped in the day-to-day operations of the store.I thoroughly enjoy connecting with our regular customers -- so much so that I have come to know their names and orders, and I love handing them their cup of coffee or breakfast sandwich before they have even gotten to the register. Within my first five months, I was awarded Partner of the Quarter (Jan. 2019) for exceptional customer service and teamwork.Shortly afterward, for being responsible, honest, and organized, I was promoted to Tip Distribution Leader where I calculate and distribute everyone's weekly tips. I improved the process by making it more transparent (keeping a binder of the weekly tip distribution reports accessible to all baristas in the store), and I completed the task much faster (using a simple Excel spreadsheet), thus allowing me to spend more time on the floor serving customers. In April 2019, I was promoted to Barista Trainer for my knowledge, patience, and teamwork skills. When a new barista is hired, I coach them on how to make beverages, connect with customers, and effectively work as a team player.

Research Intern

National Museum Of Natural History

Washington D.C. Metro Area

After graduating from Purdue University, I interned at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History under Dr. David Adamski. I worked on a project where I described two species of moths in the genus Frumenta, and I got to choose the names of the species. I learned how to dissect and mount moth genitalia; took scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) of specific genitalic structures; curated, databased, and digitized the museum's collection of Frumenta specimens; and worked with one of the museum's illustrators, Young Sohn, to depict various parts of the moths. I presented my project at the Lepidopterists' Society annual meeting (July, 2019), and I wrote up the project and submitted it for publication to the Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington (published in 2020).

Jun 2018 - Nov 2019

Undergraduate Research Assistant

West Lafayette, Indiana, United States

Worked part-time as a curatorial assistant at the Purdue Entomological Research Collection, first under Dr. Jennifer Zaspel and later under Dr. Timothy Anderson. I labeled, curated, and databased a large portion of the Lepidoptera collection in order to make the collection more accessible to researchers. Also worked part-time as a research assistant under Ph.D. student Paola Olaya-Arenas with her research on the effects of pesticides on monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) growth, development, and survival. I assisted in rearing the monarch caterpillars and took care of the milkweed plants over the summer. I also used ImageJ to calculate the amount of leaf tissue the caterpillars consumed
