As a laboratory technician, I am responsible for physical, chemical, and microbiological analysis of water samples for research occurring on site in order to report on the quality of the water and maintain the healthy environment for the aquaculture system tanks. I operate and maintain lab equipment, such as spectrophotometers, bench top meters and probes, autoclaves, ovens, etc. I also complete requirements for our NPDES permits. Data entry, analysis, and troubleshooting are all part of the daily routine. We practice quality control to ensure the accuracy of our results. I exhibit proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste. I have also assisted in the training of new interns. Annually, we travel to local natural springs and conduct assessments and inspections of the springs. When time permits, I travel out of the lab and assist with maintaining of the systems and daily husbandry of the Atlantic Salmon and Rainbow Trout.

I worked as an environmental laboratory intern at Freshwater Institute, a facility focused on conservation and sustainability. My daily duties included physical, chemical, and microbiological analysis of water samples for current research projects happening on site in order to report on the quality of the water and maintain the healthy environment for the aquaculture system tanks. I gained experience outside of the lab as well, serving as a caretaker for the fish when needed. This helped me learn about closed systems and how to maintain them.

My time as an Animal Care Intern in the Walter Scott Aquarium allowed me to learn the husbandry of many marine species including corals, jellyfish, sea turtles, sharks, sting rays, and various saltwater fish. I prepared daily diets and carried out other daily tasks such as feedings and tank cleaning. I was able to assist in enrichment for an octopus, training activities for numerous animals, and recording of animal records. Being able to interact with the public and answer questions about the animals was one of the many rewarding aspects of this experience.
