Applying to become a Resident Advisor was one of the best decisions I made throughout my undergraduate career, as it allowed me to serve others in my community and give back to the university that gave so much to me. The RA position is a multifaceted leadership position which requires peer counseling, crisis management, programming, policy enforcement, administrative, and staff skills and duties. For the freshman residents I oversaw, I wore multiple 'hats' that ranged anywhere from policy enforcer to shoulder to cry on, as it was important to me that the relationship I had with my residents was a positive one. I speak from personal experience when I say that the transition to college can be one of the most difficult changes an individual can go through: moving away from home, becoming your own person, dealing with mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression, finding a support system, managing the academic course load, etc. can easily become overwhelming.
