I am an accomplished Reading Specialist and Elementary School Teacher with 25+ years of experience dedicated to applying quality teaching skills to increase student learning. I am currently a Reading Specialist at New Bedford Public Schools (MA). I was a Reading Specialist at a Virginia Title 1 school, Hutchison Elementary, that was struggling with state accreditation in Reading. While at Hutchison I designed and implemented professional development on modern teaching techniques in K-6 Reading for teachers. As a result and after only 2 years, Hutchison Elementary School regained full state accreditation in Reading. I have experience teaching each grade level K-6 and am certified in Cognitive Coaching. I am thoroughly versed in a wide range of teaching methods including: Differentiated Instruction, Problem Based Learning, Formative Assessment Strategies, Integrated Thematic Instruction, Process Phonics, Leveled Literacy Instruction, Dimensions of Learning, Balanced Literacy Program, Developmental Approach to Science and Health from the University of Hawaii, and Investigations Math from Syracuse University. I am a trained instructor for ER&D Teaching “Strategies That Work” and have experience with administering and analyzing DRA2 primary kit, upper kit and word analysis. My breadth of experience includes teaching in a common core state (New York) and a non-common core state (Virginia), urban and suburban settings, Title 1 and affluent schools, and the perspective of a teacher as well as a specialist.
