MY WORKI explore wine as an expression of social and cultural identity, how it manifests history, tradition, and fashion. I’m interested in how wine became modern and how makers have continually reinvented it to fit evolving tastes and technologies. I write about place and people with special curiosity about how one affects the other. I also create visual essays using my own illustrations to emphasize other aspects of the narrative and connect with visual learners. My current research focuses on wine language and lexicons and how our linguistic choices reinforce or explode notions of wine’s place in culture. I’m also exploring wine’s evolution into post-modernism.MY BACKGROUNDI have academic training in fine art, creative writing, cultural history, ecology, botany, and life sciences. I spent my early career as a digital designer before becoming an adviser to creative services and editorial teams, including in the wine sector. I’ve been researching and writing about wine and food since 2008, with bylines in consumer and trade publications and my own site, Terroir Review. I lecture on wine writing and mentor new wine writers, and have been both fellow and faculty at the Wine Writers’ Symposium. My work has earned mention in the New York Times, Washington Post, Jancisrobinson.com, and elsewhere. It has won Born Digital and Wine Blog Awards, was twice finalist for the IACP Food Writing Award, and was Notable in Best American Travel Writing. I am current chair of the Circle of Wine Writers, a Certified Specialist of Wine, and a member of Wine Scholar Guild. I earned a B.A. summa cum laude in Visual Studies and an M.A. in Liberal Studies – Creative Writing, both from Dartmouth. I live in New Hampshire.
