As a senior technical expert in countering violent extremism (CVE) and women peace and security (WPS), I have over 15 years of experience with research design, evaluation, analysis, programs management, and the development of direct services that build community resilience to violence. I have extensive experience with field-based research in about 20 countries, providing governmental and non-governmental clients with needs assessments, strategic guidance, and training to improve public policy and programming to advance peace and security. As a community engagement specialist, I have created and implemented positive youth development programming along with cultural competency curricula to enhance inclusion of women, minorities and vulnerable populations. I also offer courses on Gender and Terrorism; and Community-based efforts to Prevent Terrorism.

Ms. Farooq leads policy analysis, research, and programming to enhance the capacity of civil society organizations to promote peace and counter violent extremism. She has led field-based research in twenty countries to identify drivers of conflict and opportunities for building strong, resilient communities. Currently Ms. Farooq is advising and training non-governmental organizations and public agencies on developing holistic, multi-disciplinary violence prevention strategies that can be tailored to address terrorism. Applying international best practices, Ms. Farooq assisted in the development of WORDE’s Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism (BRAVE) program. At WORDE’s innovation lab in Montgomery County, MD she has supported research and programing on developing counter narratives to violent extremists. Ms. Farooq has also developed and executed seminars for local and federal law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders as part of a 2014 Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant. She has also provided subject matter expertise for a law enforcement training manual to improve community outreach and engagement for countering violent extremism initiatives, as part of a 2014 National Institute of Justice (NIJ)–funded demonstration project. In addition, she has assisted in the development of WORDE’s Global Citizen’s Forum (GCF), a peer gatekeeper training program that fosters upstander skills and help seeking behaviors as a bulwark against radicalization to violence; and provided an analytical framework for evaluating the replicability of GCF for a 2017 NIJ funded study.Farooq has co-authored several monographs, and has published op-eds in Foreign Policy, the Congressional daily, The Hill, the Wall Street Journal; the Christian Science Monitor, and an exclusive series for Foreign Policy Magazine on community-based approaches to countering extremism in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
