Melanie (she/her) is motivated by the dire need to have a more equitable world, and channels this motivation through leading efforts that rebuild institutions and create new means for marginalized communities to have access to finance, power, and decision making in our food system. She is currently the Program Director for Black Farmer Fund (BFF), a community-led investment fund that facilitates non-extractive capital, technical assistance, and community network building for Black farmers, land stewards, herbalists and other food actors across the Northeast. Prior to her work at BFF, Melanie worked on the intersection of climate change, agriculture and human rights with organizations like Conservation International, Amnesty International, Les Jardins Chez Marlene, and Decolonizing Wealth Project. She understands food systems challenges in a global context, supporting agriculture related work in Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Brazil and Ghana. As a 2019 Fulbright Scholar in Benin, she studied traditional knowledge on yam production and how local farming communities were adapting to climate change and using migration as a means to seek more secure livelihoods. Her passion and commitment to building a more just and equitable food system through the redistribution of resources is grounded in self determination, food sovereignty and collective liberation. She thrives in collaborative, intergenerational spaces that center community needs and challenge the status quo. Melanie studied Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Delaware and completed her Masters in Sustainable International Development at Brandeis University. Fulbright Research FellowFulbright Association Sep 2018 - Jul 2019Abomey-Calavi, BeninLed a research project focusing on how local communities in Benin, West Africa are understanding climate change, how it is affecting their agricultural production, and how they are using their traditional knowledge to adapt to climate change. Publication: https://www.iucn.org/news/commission-environmental-economic-and-social-policy/201912/environmentally-induced-migration-and-impact-yam-farmers-benin Affiliate: National University of Abomey-CalaviDuration of project: 9 monthsContext: Agricultural systems are increasingly threatened by the growing risks associated with climate change—notably environmental degradation, natural disasters and water depletion. Smallholder farmers are disproportionately vulnerable to these factors due to their reliance on agriculture for subsistence and livelihood. To mitigate the risks from these threats, local farmers often depend on traditional practices that have been passed down through generations to guide the food production process. As farmers migrate from rural areas, the knowledge and usage of such practices are often lost and replaced with more modern practices based on Western scientific knowledge. My curiosity lies in understanding the interplay of traditional knowledge and scientific knowledge and recognizing existing gaps for meaningful exchanges along the rural-urban continuum. Increasing urbanization has enhanced the opportunity for communication flows between urban and rural areas, creating space for new ideas to be introduced. While previous studies have emphasized the value of incorporating traditional knowledge and practices in designing sustainable agriculture systems, putting this into practice remains a challenge due to misconceptions that exist among different stakeholders. With the Fulbright, I am exploring how traditional systems are currently being retained and reworked as new, external concepts are introduced. -
