Learn more about me and my projects at melisadegroot.com!I recently defended my PhD dissertation entitled “SMOC-1: The Lon and the Sma of it.” Working in Kelly Liu's lab at Cornell University in the field of Genetics, Genomics, and Development (GGD), I studied how cells communicate with each other. In particular, I implemented a combination of genetic, molecular and biochemical techniques to demonstrate that the secreted modular calcium binding protein (SMOC-1) promotes activation of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway in C. elegans and developed a testable model for how the interactions occur at the molecular level. I am passionate about communicating my graduate work, as well as other current research findings with a wide variety of audiences to help illuminate the value of foundational research.

When I compared to sham and solvent injected controls, I found that the solvent had a significant effect on pattern formation.
