Melissa Ames is an Associate Professor and the Director of English Education at Eastern Illinois University where she advises all secondary English Language Arts pre-service teachers. Her research interests include media literacy, pedagogy, television scholarship, Internet studies, and popular culture. Her most recent and forthcoming publications include her books Women and Language (McFarland, 2011), Time in Television Narrative (University of Mississippi Press, 2012), and How Pop Culture Shapes the Stages of a Woman’s Life (Palgrave, 2016); chapters in Grace Under Pressure: Grey’s Anatomy Uncovered (2008), Writing the Digital Generation (2010), Bitten by Twilight (2010), Manufacturing Phobias (2016), and Adventures in Shondaland (2018), Young Adult Literature in the Composition Classroom (2018), and the Computers & Writing Proceedings (2018); and articles in The Journal of Dracula Studies (2011), The Women and Popular Culture Encyclopedia (2012), The High School Journal (2013), The Journal of Popular Culture (2014), Feminist Media Studies (2017), and Pedagogy (2017).

Associate ProfessorEastern Illinois University Aug 2014 - PresentService Recognition:Recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Service Award, Dr. Ames was recognized for her dedicated service to the English department, EIU, her profession, and the community. In addition to serving on numerous university, college, and English department committees, she directs the EIU English Studies Summer Camp for High School Students. A former public high school teacher, she runs professional development workshops for local school districts and serves as a literacy volunteer in the Champaign Public School System, as a PTA Secretary, and a Young Author’s Contest facilitator and judge. Curriculum Development & Instruction:Dr. Ames has designed various courses required for ELA teacher certification candidates (e.g. Multimodal Composition), as well as minors (e.g. English Language Arts Minor) available for candidates in other disciplines. She recently served on a committee that designed EIU's new Alternative Certification Program.
